PRIDE MONTH: Lego shows Everyone is Awesome

Star Wars, Harry Potter, DC Comics, Disney are just some of the adored Lego collections around the world. Lego have nailed it again. Do you remember the Lego Movie and its ear worm worthy theme song, “Everything is Awesome”?

Well this latest collection is a clever play on words, The Everyone is Awesome set celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and will be released for Pride month this June.

Featuring 11 Mini-figs with a background inspired by colours of the LGBTQ+ rainbow. Considered a symbol of love and acceptance this buildable display starts with black and brown, acknowledging the diversity of skin tones across the globe, before building into the original rainbow flag and finally flowing into the pale blue, white and pink to reflect and embrace the transgender community. A spokesperson for LEGO announced that “The Everyone is Awesome set is designed to celebrate the diversity of our fans and the world around us”.

By creating the figurines as deliberately gender ambiguous Lego have taken a big leap towards championing acceptance of gender fluidity in our society.

Lego designer Matthew Ashton revealed to The Guardian he initially created the set for his work desk. “I’d moved office, so wanted to make the space feel like home with something that reflected me and the LGBTQIA+ community I am so proud to be apart of.”

Other staff started requesting sets and soon the interest was enough to have Ashton realise there was a demand for his creation and that by sharing it provided an inclusive statement he wished he had growing up.

The set will go on sale from June 1, the beginning of Pride Month across the globe.
