Kelly Reichardt produces a brilliant Western with her latest film.

'First Cow' is a newly released film directed by cult director Kelly Reichardt. It is a film based in 1820s Northwest America about two travellers (played by John Magaro and Orion Lee) who find each other and create a brotherly bond with one another. They want to make some money but they can't until an opportunity strikes in the form of a cow.

The film is based on a short story by Reichardt’s friend and longtime collaborator John Raymond who also helped write the screenplay.

'First Cow' combines some of the elements that Reichardt used in her last films and made them even better. The cinematography is amazing. It is so still yet so effective. The movie itself is very quiet at times which makes it easier for the audience to be on edge.

This film is one of two period pieces by the director. The other being 'Meek's Cutoff' released in 2010. Both of which are set in the 1800s.

It is technically her first film in 5 years since 2016’s ‘Certain Women’. The original release of 'First Cow' was delayed due to Covid, only being released in Australian cinemas this year.

This film may not be for everyone but I encourage you to watch it because it is one of the best movies I've seen all year.

If you like this one, check out Kelly Reichardt’s other films. All within the same vein. You can tell you are watching one of her films as soon as it comes on. If you see hardworking individuals from a small town with beautiful, still cinematography; It’s one of Reichardt's films.

You can check out the beauty of ‘First Cow’ right now at Luna Cinemas in Leederville.
