Boarding, More Than Just a Week

Last week was national boarding week in Australia. It runs every year in May, this year 16th-22nd. It’s a week designed to celebrate the effort and achievements in the boarding community as a whole, from both staff and students within boarding schools.

You might not realise it, but there are over 30 boarding facilities that operate around Western Australia. Each one providing an essential service to those who are not so fortunate to live near to secondary education, or where it simply is not possible to make commute to school every day. In some cases, you will even find people who are international students who want to experience high school in Australia.

The thought of boarding for some people can be very daunting, and as an ex-boarding student myself I can vouch for the fact that the first night is almost always the hardest, you have been overloaded with a bunch of new information, you are trying to remember the year 12’s names and all while processing the fact that you’re away from your family and most likely, just missing the taste of Mum’s home-made cooking. But, once you get adjusted and settle into the routine, you find yourself talking to people who up until just a week ago you never knew.

It is a surreal experience but, if you ever get the opportunity to give boarding a try, I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. You get to live with some of your best mates full time, and while there is always someone you won ’t get along with, that just helps build the friendships you make even more.

But, if you really don’t enjoy any of these aspects, there’s always the benefit of looking forward to a nice, cooked lunch, in a warm dining room whilst the day students sit outside in the cold rain.
